Teega Wende Orphanage

One of CARO’s main projects is the Teega Wende Orphanage in the West African country of Burkina Faso. The words "Teega Wende" mean “in God’s arms” in a local dialect.

The Teega Wende Orphanage cares for over 200 children:

  • The orphanage cares for children whose mother or both parents are deceased, as well as abandoned children and the children of severely mental ill parents. The Burkinabé government investigates and places each child.

  • The orphanage itself about hosts 35 children ages 0-3. The orphans often arrive at the orphanage in very poor health and receive life-saving care from the orphanage’s nurses and nannies.

  • The orphanage reintegrates children into the community. When they are old enough, the children return to their surviving relatives or host families if necessary. ASFOP continues to pay for the children's school fees, medical costs, and some food.

ASFOP: CARO's local partner

CARO's local partner ASFOP is a national award-winning women’s association in Yako, Burkina Faso. ASFOP's name means the Association for the Safeguard and Protection of Women and Orphans in Passoré province. ASFOP’s mission is to “help the most vulnerable to survive in a country where the poverty’s face is more feminine and young.”

ASFOP's major project is the Teega Wende Orphanage, which it established in 2003. ASFOP's other projects include: a primary/pre-school school, a dormitory for out-of-town schoolgirls, a professional skills centre for young women, and awareness raising activities. ASFOP's founding President Angèle Zida directs ASFOP's projects on a volunteer basis.

CARO focuses on supporting the orphanage, its children, and its employees. CARO also established soap-making and weaving activities at the orphanage, which provide a modest return to ASFOP and its employees.

Two decades of partnership

In 2004, Medicine Hat native Garrett Johnson lived in Burkina Faso as a Canada World Youth exchange program volunteer. He lived in the home of ASFOP President Angèle Zida. Upon his return, Garrett joined CARO and petitioned for CARO’s support. Over the past two decades, CARO has sent more than $0.5 million in support to ASFOP! Many CARO volunteers have visited the Teega Wende Orphanage over the years. In 2011, Angèle Zida visited CARO in Medicine Hat.
